Elements • Light and Shadow
These are the ingredients that bring your drawings to life. Without them
your drawings would more than likely appear flat or inanimate.
Using these elements creates interest in your art works. How you apply
these elements is a personal chose for you can use an eraser, Tortillons,
pencil or other artist tools.
Art Subject
In this lesson a wooden egg is used as the art subject. The
shape of the wooden egg is a simple subject selection which helps
in understanding basic elements.
Full Light
The area on your art subject that receives the most exposure from your light source.
Reflected Light
Objects surrounding your art subject reflect light from the light source
to your art subject. An example is while looking at the lens of sun-glasses
you can see the reflection of an image that is nearby.
Cast Shadow
The area of your art subject or composition that is blocked
from receiving light from your light source. This is similar to what
you see in a lunar eclipse. As the earth passes between the sun and
moon the earth casts a shadow over the moon.
Shadow Edge
This area of shadow is generally between your Full Light and Reflected
Light. It is the transition area that separates illuminated areas.
